According to classical Western historiography, modernity begins in 1789 with the advent of the French Revolution. Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990) is a long, violent and enthralling interweaving of biography, social observation and black comedy. It is a story based on the real life of Henry Hill, who grew to manhood in the Mafia and eventually (6)---- his former associates, sending them to prison for the rest of their lives.
